This six-hour continuing professional development course examines the societal, structural, and legal considerations relating to national and border security. The course begins with an overview of the historic evolution of modern borders, examines the rise of global terrorism, transnational crime, as well as the more recent rise of independent actors engaged in extreme violence. Following the overview section, the main criminal and terrorist groups active within Canada will be identified, and the key organizations and law enforcement agencies involved in the safeguarding of national and border security will be discussed. Finally, the laws specific to border security and national security within a Canadian context will be reviewed –– namely the Criminal Code, Anti-terrorism Act, Emergencies Act, Customs Act, Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, Access and Privacy Acts, Security of Information Act, and Canada Evidence Act. Upon completion of this course, participants will have gained a greater understanding of how the laws specific to national and border security have evolved over the past fifteen years, and will also learn how these laws are applied within both administrative and criminal proceedings.
